Best of DFW 2008: Movies

Our film critic reveals his favorite films of '08. You'll Definitely be surprised. Maybe.

DFW.com

It may look sappy and stupid, but apparently 'Definitely, Maybe' is one of the 10 best films of 2008, according to Star-Telegram film critic Christopher Kelly.

A film about a girl who loses her dog might not sound like Top 10 material, but 'Wendy and Lucy' is just that.

'Rachel Getting Married' - a masterpiece, with two of the year's best female performances.

Although it is the late-year release 'Milk' that will be earning Gus Van Sant some film award nominations, it is his superior 'Paranoid Park' that makes the Top 10 list.

'The Class' stars Francois Begaudeau as a teacher in a French high school.

These are the five highest-grossing films of 2008. Which one was your favorite?

DFW.com Big Blogger Christopher Kelly has been the Star-Telegram's premier film critic for eight years. He has seen some awful, awful films. And some that would knock off your socks.

Although 2008 was not the finest year for quality for 11th-hour Oscar contenders, Chris says, it was a year that still produced its treasures. The 10 finest of those films, ranked for your counting-down pleasure, will be revealed Dec. 29 in the Star-Telegram and here on DFW.com. In the meantime, to tide us over, I spoke to Chris about his list, and the overall year in movies.

Listen to our conversation by clicking on the audio player above. In our chat, we cover five of the movies on his list -- including "Definitely, Maybe" and "Wendy and Lucy." Each segment is 2-3 minutes; if you don't care about what you're hearing, you can hit the skip button to move forward. Also, be sure you're keeping up with Chris' thoughts on all things -- not just movies -- on the Big Blog here at DFW.com.
