Lone Star Sounds: Film fest remembers Bruton, honors Kristofferson

To hear his friends tell it, the late Stephen Bruton was so good at so many different things, it hardly seemed fair.

The Fort Worth-raised singer/songwriter/guitarist also dabbled in film and TV acting: "Stephen covered the whole gauntlet," says his pal Dave Millsap.

Millsap and five others were tapped by the Lone Star International Film Festival to oversee the inaugural Stephen Bruton Award and find a worthy recipient. This year’s honoree, Bruton’s lifelong buddy Kris Kristofferson, will accept the honor Nov. 13 in a private Stockyards ceremony. The intimate affair will be followed by a public ceremony at the Longhorn Saloon, where "some of Bruton’s friends will be playing," says Millsap, declining to confirm whether Kristofferson will be among them.

The honor isn’t restricted to musicians, but rather "people in the performing arts," Millsap says. "Theoretically, if [longtime Willie Nelson roadie] Poodie [Locke] hadn’t died, he could’ve received it. It’s that kind of deal."

The five- or six-person committee will rotate annually, but Millsap says he will keep an eye on things going forward. There are also hints the LSIFF powers-that-be would like the award to possibly anchor a music component that could take place concurrently with future festivals, a la South by Southwest.

"We want [the award] to be taken seriously," says Millsap.
