Cliburn Confidential: Andrea Lam
A series of conversations with the Cliburn competitors
Andrea Lam
(pronounced and-dreh-ah lahm)
Nationality: Australian
Born: Sydney
Lives: New York City
Age: 27
Education: Yale University and the Manhattan School of Music
Began playing piano: "At age 5. I don’t remember not playing."
Previous Fort Worth visit: "When I was 14, I attended the TCU Piano Institute and listened to the Cliburn competition."
The turning point: "Growing up, the piano was more in the hobby category. Then I did a competition when I was 13, and I won that. So it was a huge experience for me. And that’s when I thought this might be more than a hobby."
Has performed with: The Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra. How many pianists can say that?
When she is not playing: "I love word games. I love the crosswords and Boggle."
Favorite composers: "It varies a lot, and one of the great things about playing piano is that there is so much repertoire and so many different types of music and composers to choose from. But some all-time favorites include Schumann and Bach."
Looking ahead to the competition: "The great thing about competitions is that they allow you to play before people you wouldn’t have otherwise. I just hope nerves don’t get in the way of presenting myself as I am. It is kind of terrifying and fun to go through the whole discovery process."
Favorite bands: Beatles, Radiohead, Led Zeppelin
Favorite singers: Nina Simone and Björk
Favorite movies include: Slumdog Millionaire, Man on Wire, Lord of the Rings series, WALL-E
Favorite TV shows include: The Wire, 30 Rock, The Colbert Report, Ugly Betty, As Time Goes By, Fawlty Towers, The Simpsons and The Office
One way in which she is not a typical Australian: "Vegemite [a popular sandwich spread], I can live without."
