Boots: Pointed-toe boots are more popular, but if you have a round-toe roper, you can still wear it out to the bar. Stick with a mainstream color like black or brown. Ariat Fat Babys or Chukkas are working boots that feel like shoes. Burn your lacers! Boots can run well into the hundreds, depending on the detail and manufacturing, but they will last a lifetime and can be repaired.

Buckles/belts: It’s a mix. While rhinestones and shiny silver are still popular, it’s also pretty easy to get mistaken for a buckle bunny if you have a shiny belt on. Stick with leather and a little bling on the buckle. You’re not a rock star. You don’t need to shine.

Jeans: No Rockies! It’s more popular to wear 7 for All Mankind or a looser low-cut fit with pockets in the back. A dark or denim wash is fine.

Shirts: Traditional cowgirl dress shirts have a more vintage feel with pearl snaps and piping on the pockets. Look for embroidered shirts with flowers or birds hand-stitched on the back and front. For going out, longer shirts with embroidery or flashy stones along the neckline are popular and, of course, there’s the boob shirt. You don’t need a Western cut. If it’s tight and can be tucked up under your push-up bra, it qualifies.

Hats: Some wear the hat, some don’t. But if you are getting a hat, find a shape that flatters you. Hats add width and height but that can be a bad thing for a woman. The crown of your hat should look like your jaw shaped upside down. Those pink straw hats with feathers are out. Way out.

Accessories: Chunky jewelry, silver, rhinestone and turquoise.

Tips: It helps to know how to dance a two-step. A lot of cowboys can. But beware of cowboys who can two-step really well — they’re likely players with a taste for bunnies.

Real cowboys

If you’re looking for the real deal, here’s what to look for. A real cowboy should have boots that are worn, not clean. Their cowboy hats are dirty and their buckles are big. If he’s a rodeo cowboy, it’s likely a trophy buckle, and it should have his name on it. Oh, and chewing tobacco is still popular. And still disgusting. It wouldn’t hurt to ask him a couple of the Cowgirl Quiz questions. If he can’t feed a goat, move on!
