Our "Burgie" awards for more burger highlights
After eating at 32 D-FW burgers joints, we couldn’t limit our accolades (or criticism) to just one. Here are "The Burgies," our alternative awards for the cheesiest, greasiest and most avocado-savvy burgers in town.
Best Buns
Dutch’s:Generally speaking, we regard our hamburgers the way we regard potential lovers: If the buns are square-shaped, we usually go looking elsewhere. But at Dutch’s, the buns — thick, yeasty, with a curious hint of sweetness — blend eloquently with the saltiness of the meat, launching the burger into a whole new stratosphere. Even the squareness works, lending a compact stylishness to one of the classiest burgers in town. (Hmm, maybe we shouldn’t have written off our ex-boyfriend so quickly.)
Best Value
Steak ’n Shake: Sneer all you want at the idea of a chain offering the tastiest burger for your buck. But you will be hard-pressed to find something as satisfying, unexpectedly original and downright cheap as Steak ’n Shake’s terrific "steakburger" meals — $3.99 for a recession-era burger that’s fit for a king.
Best Burger You Would Never Think Works But Does
The Caesar Burger, Scotty P’s: They call it "our idea of salad and a sandwich," a traditional burger topped with a mound of Caesar salad. And while you’re probably having unpleasant visions of too much soggy lettuce, and dressing mixing with grease and running down your hands, the execution of this burger — the cold of the Caesar mixing with the warmth of the burger — makes it the best one on the menu at Scotty P’s.
Biggest surprise
Gourmet Cheeseburger, Red Robin: Going into Red Robin, we had a ton of skepticism. It is, after all, a very chainy chain. But RR’s gourmet cheeseburger shattered our skepticism and delivered a terrific chargrilled burger with spot-on veggies (extra points for red onion). And the pickle relish, spiked with ketchup, took the burger up another notch on the flavor spectrum. We are now a believer.
Best bacon
Jakes: The Dallas burger king adorns its sumptuous blue cheese burger with a flawless slab o’ bacon — salty, chewy and big enough to cover most of the burger. Beautious.
Best condiment/sauce
M&O’s secret hamburger sauce: The tangy, tomato-based cream sauce tastes nothing like Thousand Island dressing, and that’s a good thing.
Best excuse to eat a quail egg
Dirty Love
Burger, Love Shack: The signature ingredient – a fried quail egg — enhances the flavor of the prime tenderloin and brisket burger but doesn’t overpower it.
Best use of avocado
California Avocado Burger, OC Burger: The heaping helping of tender avocados piled on this double-meat cheeseburger was luscious, plain and simple.
Best fries
Five Guys Burgers and Fries: There’s a reason 'fries’ is part of the name. The skin-on potatoes are crispy, perfectly seasoned and abundant. Try both varieties: Five Guys style and Cajun.
