Meet our best-burger judges
Meet the carnivorous connoisseurs who are dedicating countless hours — not to mention Weight Watchers points — trekking around D-FW to taste all 32 of our battling burger contenders. We will neither rest nor close our mouths until we have ultimately determined which burger is the best around. It’s a greasy job, but one that has to be done.
Michael "Mayor McCheese" Currie
Burger motto: Always go with the double.
Earliest burger memory: The fantastic French Burger from the defunct Best Burger in Waxahachie. It consisted of toasted bread, two thin patties, grilled onions and Parmesan. I realized there’s more to the art of the burger than just McDonald’s.
The ideal burger: The main thing is just bring the flavor. Nothing is more defeating than a flavorless burger.
Christopher "The Hamburglar" Kelly
Burger motto: Vegetarians make lousy dinner guests.
Earliest burger memory: Dad taking me to McDonald’s, where I usually ordered the Chicken McNuggets. Even then I had an aversion to the fast-food burger.
The ideal burger: Big, juicy, generously seasoned, with a sprinkle of onion and perhaps jalapeño — and of course slathered with Cheddar cheese. (Also, never underestimate the value of a good, hearty bun that can handle the soggiest, greasiest slab of meat.)
John "Not-So-Wimpy" Metz
Burger motto: Life is short, but not too short to try every burger in town.
Earliest burger memory: My first steps were taken at a Steak n Shake, when I wandered to the counter and climbed up onto a stool to see what was sizzling back there. I’ve been hooked on the smell of grease ever since.
The ideal burger: Cheesy and hot, like yours truly.
Rick "Big Boy" Press
Burger motto: Give me medium rare, or give me death.
Earliest burger memory: On a family vacation in Pennsylvania, I remember stopping at a roadside burger stand and tearing into a thick, juicy cheeseburger as big as my head. I still dream about it.
The ideal burger: Peppery flavored beef, with luscious melted cheese and chewy bacon. And since moving to Texas, I’m a fan of the jalapeño — on anything.
Heather "In a Box" Svokos
Burger motto: My darling, my cheeseburger.
Earliest burger memory: Being on vacation at my grandmother’s in Holmes Beach, Fla., sitting with my folks in a little lean-to called Duffy’s Tavern and tasting a hot, juicy number, washed down with a cold sarsaparilla.
The ideal burger: Juicy but not overly greasy, well-seasoned, with dark mustard and Cheddar or blue cheese, a few slivers of avocado, all stacked on a kaiser roll, or any non-spongy bun.
