UPDATE: The submission period for the 2014 Model Pet of DFW contest is now closed. The winners will be notified, and announced in coming weeks. Until then, we are busily approving entries. You can check out some of the submissions within the contest by clicking here. Check back at DFW.com, or DFW.com/pets next week for a full slideshow of entries.
We all have a bond with our pets. Their pictures dominate the camera rolls on our smartphones and make plenty of appearances on our Facebook timelines, Twitter feeds and Instagram pages. Or maybe you’re old-school and you have framed pictures and albums. They bring out the best parts of us, whether they be dog, cat, horse, ferret or even more offbeat.
And now, it’s the time of year again to show how awesome you think your pet is, by entering your animal friend into DFW.com’s 6th annual Model Pet of DFW contest.
He or she could join the ranks of Bacon, Sacha, Isabelle, Phizz and last year’s winners (in three categories), Tanker, the trick-dog champion, Katniss the survivor cat, and Bentley, the Percheron cross draft horse.
As we did last year, we will award prizes to the top dog, top cat and top alterna-pet (longhorns, reptiles, bunnies, guinea pigs and what-have-yous; you don’t even have to limit it to four legs).
And as always, if you entered your pet in a previous year, you can submit him or her again, unless you’re the parents of a former winner.
So what makes a model pet? Maybe he’s got a lot of talent. Maybe she’s overcome tremendous odds. Maybe he stands for a cause. Maybe she’s just smart, or cute, or heroic, or all three. Whatever the reason, we want to hear what makes your creature a model pet.
How to enter: At the link below, you’ll be able to upload a photo of your pet (in jpeg format), along with your contact information and a description of why you think your beloved creature is DFW’s most model pet. Essays must be fewer than 300 words.
A pet in each category will win a prize. Prizes will be determined at a later date.
The deadline for entries is 5 p.m. Thursday, July 31. Employees of the McClatchy Co. are not eligible. Participants must live in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
Winners will be announced later this summer.
Also: Read about some previous winners: Last year, they were Tanker, Katniss and Bentley. In 2012 they were Phizz, General Sam Houston and the longhorns; in 2011, it was Isabelle, a big beautiful Mastiff whose story of healing touched our hearts; in 2010, we chose an icy-eyed Siberian husky princess named Sacha. Our first winner, in 2009, was the insanely happy French bulldog named Bacon.
