Eats Beat: KC pizzeria set to give Southlake a Spin

Kansas City’s favorite pizza is coming to Texas.

Spin! Neapolitan Pizza, a stone-baked artisan pizza restaurant with hipster appeal to bicyclists and dog owners, will open in the Southlake Town Square outskirts space left behind when Blue Mesa Grill moved to Arlington.

In nine years, Spin! has managed to win a wall full of Kansas City “best” rankings and spread to six states.

But DFW is a tough pizza market, and Southlake in particular already has Campania, Coal Vines, Apeizza and I Fratelli, plus a flashy Neapolitan-style pizza cafe down the street at the new Whole Foods Market in Colleyville.

Spin! partner Gail Lozoff told the Kansas City Star the restaurant’s Texas customers have asked for locations and that DFW “is known as a place where people love to try new things.”

Kansas City chef Michael Smith, a former regional James Beard Award winner, consulted on the menu.

The Southlake Spin! is planned to open by the winter holidays at 1586 E. Southlake Blvd.;

Only a name change

Across the square, the il Calabrese name will go up by August to replace the white-elephant Patrizio Osteria.

Builder-owner Oscar Renda’s $6 million restaurant will keep regular hours through the name change, he wrote on the restaurant’s Facebook page. Chef Luciano Salvadore and the staff stays with a tweaked menu; 1281 E. Texas 114, 817-251-8798,

Wraps, gluten-free and more

If you think The Lunch Box’s new decor is a big change, look at McKinley’s Fine Bakery and Cafe.

The University Park Village cafe has added chicken or turkey-bacon wraps, more hot sandwiches, so-called Paleolithic dishes and gluten-free cookies and cakes.

Originally an all-pink Celebrity Bakery spinoff, McKinley’s now has an airy, sunny dining room that’s usually filled with customers dining on orange-honey-cranberry chicken salad.

McKinley’s is angling for more breakfast business with a praline French toast or a Paleo breakfast of four eggs, three bacon strips and berries.

“We hear all the time, ‘I didn’t even know you did breakfast,’ ” partner Stacey Rumfelt said.

McKinley’s opens at 8 a.m. weekdays and Saturdays, 11 a.m. Sundays, and closes in early evening; 1616 S. University Drive, 817-332-3242,
