Kris Kristofferson at Bass Hall
It’s not hard to discern Kris Kristofferson’s artistic mindset these days. Just look at the titles of the Texas native’s last three albums: 2006’s This Old Road; 2009’s Closer to the Bone and last year’s Feeling Mortal. Taken as, among other things, a triptych reflecting upon mortality, it’s a deeply powerful body of work, but the same could be said for all of the Country Music Hall of Famer’s catalog. From his earliest days, Kristofferson has peered deeper than most into the soul’s recesses, excavating occasionally painful but always necessary truths. They don’t make ’em like this anymore, rendering his acoustic evening at one of the finest rooms in the state as nothing less than essential.
7:30 p.m. Saturday. Bass Hall, Fort Worth. $38.50-$82.50.
Jessica Lea Mayfield at Club Dada
Singer-songwriter Jessica Lea Mayfield is winding down her two-month tour in support of her just-released third album, Make My Head Sing ... The 24-year-old Ohio native’s first foray into production (with her husband and bassist, Jesse Newport) is an appealing paradox — there’s more air in the songs, but they all hit harder than anything she’s released to date. With Dylan LeBlanc.
10 p.m. Wednesday. Club Dada, Dallas. $13, $16 day of show.
