Eats Beat: Plate up a steak or barbecue for Dad

Dad always gets short shrift. Father’s Day isn’t the No. 1 dining holiday. Or No. 2 or No. 3.

Poor ol’ Dad not only ranks behind Mom and Easter, but even Halloween and St. Patrick’s Day.

To be blunt: We don’t do enough for Dad.

Neither do restaurants; they offer very few Father’s Day specials. But there are plenty of steakhouses open Sunday if you want to treat him, plus some other choices.

For example, Grace will open and serve its 44 Farms steaks from Cameron, including some of the same steaks served in Dallas’ new steak temple, Knife.

“We decided to open for the holidays this year, and I really didn’t know if people would call,” Grace owner Dain Adam Jones said. “We’ve had a lot of calls for steaks.”

Grace’s more casual downtown cousin, Little Red Wasp, is open every Sunday and also serves a 1-pound 44 Farms New York strip. It’s $38, or a half-pound strip is $24-$25 with eggs or frites.

Familiar Sunday restaurants such as H3 Ranch, Lucile’s, Mac’s and Tillman’s will open early, along with newer destinations such as Bird Cafe and Max’s Wine Dive. In Southlake, TruFire Kitchen & Bar is offering dads a free burger or chicken sandwich and $1 Shiners; 1239 Main St., 817-488-6280, trufire.us.

A smoked meat Sunday

Or here’s another idea: Barbecue.

The Woodshed Smokehouse opens Sundays, serving breakfast early and then chef Tim Love’s distinctive barbecue; 3201 Riverfront Drive, 817-877-4545, woodshedsmokehouse.com.

Baker’s Ribs in Weatherford and Big D Barbecue in Mansfield are among the outlying barbecue cafes open every Sunday. In Fort Worth, Billy’s Oak Acres BBQ, on North Las Vegas Trail, and Sammie’s Bar-B-Q, on East Belknap Street, are Sunday mainstays.

For Hill Country-style open-pit barbecue and steaks, there’s Texas legend Cooper’s Old Time Pit Bar-B-Que in the Stockyards and Hard Eight BBQ in Coppell or Roanoke. Euless landmark North Main BBQ’s buffet is open 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sundays.

Pops and pints

Or, finally, take Dad to the Fort Worth Flying Saucer, where Sunday he’ll be able to bring in an ugly tie (that you probably gave him years ago) and trade it in for a pint-size beer. Then at 9 p.m., the Saucer will show the Chevy Chase classic National Lampoon’s Vacation on its patio. 111 E. Third St., Fort Worth. beerknurd.com/

Stellar soul food

Arlington has yet another great soul food restaurant with first-rate chicken or catfish to go.

Taste of Soul by Annie Mae has smothered chicken, meatloaf, beef tips and other specials for as little as $7 on a daily special. The smothered chicken at lunch one day this week might be the best this side of south Dallas.

Taste of Soul is open for lunch and dinner Tuesdays through Saturdays and lunch Sundays at 2290 S.E. Green Oaks Blvd., 817-465-7685.
