Eats Beat: New sweets provide first peek at new menu at Olenjack’s

Posted 12:00am on Thursday, Jun. 05, 2014

Olenjack’s Grille hasn’t unveiled its new dinner menu yet. But if it’s anything like the new pastry menu, Olenjack’s will become the go-to restaurant between Dallas and Fort Worth.

Pastry chef Paige Lawrence’s new desserts arrived this week, and right away Olenjack’s began selling out of several.

The strawberry shortcake was not short on either, with marinated strawberries piled high between two cakes and a lemon crème anglaise.

The already legendary blueberry-Key lime pie on graham cracker crust was sold out. But the white chocolate-pecan-Kahlua bread pudding was a suitable substitute.

Others include the “Not Your Momma’s” chocolate layer-ganache cake, banana-pudding cheesecake on bourbon-soaked wafers, chocolate-pistachio truffles and first-rate Henry’s ice creams from Plano.

Notably, the desserts are $6 or $7, not the $10-and-up charged by prime steakhouses.

Chef Brian Olenjack’s new dining menus will come out after the Father’s Day brunch, the restaurant’s last Sunday buffet.

Olenjack’s is at 770 Road to Six Flags East, in Lincoln Square; 817-226-2600, olenjacksgrille.com.

Call it Chubby-cue

Chubby’s Burger Shack, the west-side grill known for big, drippy burgers and a 3-pound “Chubby Challenge” burger, is trying its hand at barbecue. The restaurant has added a smoker and barbecue to its full grill menu.

Smoker items include brisket, pork ribs and pulled pork, or either brisket or pork tacos.

“We wanted to do both when we opened and just couldn’t do everything at the same time,” owner Craig Chapman wrote by email.

“I think we’ve got a pretty good product.”

Chubby’s has made new friends in the Western Hills neighborhood after moving into a timeworn shopping center at Cherry Lane.

It’s now open daily except Mondays at 7914 Camp Bowie West, 817-560-5510, chubbysburgershack.com.

New Hopdoddy, new lines

Speaking of burgers, Hopdoddy Burger Bar’s second Dallas location is now open at 3227 McKinney Ave., on the corner at North Hall Street.

The new location is open for lunch and dinner daily; 214-871-2337, hopdoddy.com.

The annual feeding of Dad

Don’t neglect Dad a week from Sunday, and don’t forget to make reservations.

Many steakhouses and barbecue restaurants will serve specials, and reservations are starting to fill up at familiar H3 Ranch at the Stockyards Hotel and the busy new Del Frisco’s Grille locations in Fort Worth and Southlake.
