Eats Beat: New ideas for Mom, from mimosas to meatloaf

Mother’s Day is the busiest Sunday brunch of the year.

Don’t wait to reserve a table for May 11, and don’t forget that we’re talking about Mom.

Fine-dining, French and Italian restaurants are good choices. Burgers or a bar-and-grill — well, maybe for some moms.

If she wants a buffet, the choices are limited. But if she likes the menu, here are some choices we don’t mention often:

Grace, which opens its sunny dining room for Sunday lunch only twice a year, offers a special menu ranging from steak and eggs Benedict ($49) to a double-cut pork chop with okra ($34), rack of lamb and sides such as bacon-wrapped onions ($9) or duck-fat cheddar tater tots ($10).

Grace also is now open every Sunday for dinner; 777 Main St., Fort Worth, 817-877-3388, gracefortworth.com.

Sera Dining & Wine will offer a $40 menu featuring macerated strawberry pancakes, a pork belly-shallots-arugula-goat-cheese omelet, chicken and other choices including a rhubarb-rose-water tart dessert; 2418 Forest Park Blvd., Fort Worth, 817-927-7372, facebook.com/SeraFW.

TruFire Kitchen & Bar in Southlake, far better that most bar-and-grills, offers its regular bargain brunch menu featuring dishes such as a honey-smoked salmon Benedict with Sriracha hollandaise ($12.95), blueberry-pecan pancakes ($12.95) and $5 peach, blood-orange or blackberry mimosas; 1239 Main St. in Southlake Town Square, 817-488-6280, trufire.us.

Cacharel Restaurant in Arlington, always elegant, offers a $49.75 menu featuring salmon, pecan-crusted chicken, duck, tenderloin or a portobello pork chop, with desserts such as its beloved chocolate soufflé, an apricot-macadamia soufflé, Bailey’s creme brulee, champagne Zabaione or pistachio-Bavarian mousse; on the ninth floor at 2221 E. The Arizona-based Kona Grill chain, newly open with a balcony patio overlookng the Modern Art Museum and Cultural District, will serve a $32.95 filet-and-lobster-tail combo along with its full menu; 3028 Crockett St., 817-210-4216, konagrill.com.

Many restaurants such as Reata will serve their regular menus instead of a premium special. Reata offers chipotle meatloaf for $9.95, a chicken-fried steak breakfast for $12.95, other brunch items and its usual menu; 310 Houston St., 817-336-1009, reata.net.

Also, in a rarity, The Zodiac at Neiman Marcus in Fort Worth will open that Sunday; Ridgmar mall, 2100 Green Oaks Road, 817-989-4650, neimanmarcus.com.

• Shakeups in local restaurants this week:

Chef Keith Grober has left Rodeo Goat to open his own yet-unannounced restaurant.

(Unrelated, a second Rodeo Goat is about to open in Dallas on Market Center Boulevard.)

And Little Lilly Sushi has brought in a Dallas sushi veteran to succeed departed chef Jesús García. More on both changes on DFW.com and in the Friday Eats Beat.

• For a dining deal, look no further than Haltom City and Don Cruz Mexican Seafood & Pasta.

Don Cruz serves everything from fajitas to bacon cheeseburgers and seafood étouffée, most for less than $10 and all less than $20, even the New York strip or rib-eye steaks.

Instead of coupons, Don Cruz makes discounts easy: Spend more than $50 and get 20 percent off. So, say, two family combo platters would serve eight for about $40.
