Longtime KDFW/Channel 4 anchor Clarice Tinsley sat down with President Obama this week for an interview that covered such subjects as the Affordable Care Act, raising the minimum wage, and whether finding Malaysian Airlines Flight 370 is a priority for the White House.
As noted by Fox 4 anchor Steve Eagar in the clip below, Tinsley was one of six local-TV anchors nationwide -- and the only one from Texas -- invited by the White House to interview the president Wednesday. “The White House turned to local stations to talk about health care and the minimum wage, something the administration right now thinks national reporters aren’t talking enough about as the Obamacare registration deadline approaches.”
The first part of the interview aired Wednesday night during Fox 4’s 9 p.m. newscast; the second, which will include a tour of the White House, airs Thursday night during the newscast. Tinsley has also been posting photos of her Washington visit on her Facebook page.
Some of Obama’s harshest comments were directed at Texas Gov. Rick Perry during the health-care portion of the interview. Tinsley noted that only 10 percent of Texans eligible for the Affordable Care Act had enrolled as of March 1, and then asked, “Why? Who’s to blame?”
“Well, look it's tougher when states don't cooperate,” Obama began as he gave a lengthy answer. “I mean, keep in mind that right off the top, you've got a million Texans, who don't currently have health insurance that we know we could sign up right away for health insurance through medicaid, if Governor Perry and others decided to do the right thing. It wouldn't cost Texas a dime right away . The federal government would pay for it .” Obama also acknowledged the “terrible problems” the healthcare.gov site had during its first month and a half, saying they were “entirely our fault.” (Obama’s entire answer is in the clip below.)
After the health-care question, Tinsley switched to a more light-hearted question about SMU’s basketball team getting snubbed in the NCAA Tournament. Obama praised coach Larry Brown and congratulated the Mustangs on a great season. Fox News and CNN also picked up Tinsley’s question about the search for Malaysian Airlines Flight 370.
