Valentine’s Day: 10 last-minute ideas

Posted 6:01pm on Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2014

So it’s Valentine’s Day, and you’re trying to avoid being that person in the grocery store at 9 p.m. trying to find the least sad-looking rose. Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered with some last-minute suggestions for a perfectly lovely, out-of-the-ordinary Valentine’s Day.

For even more V-Day ideas, go to dfw.com.

A sweet Temptress at Flying Saucer

The Lakewood Temptress, which tied for first in last fall’s DFW.com North Texas Craft Beer Battle, is always worth celebrating, in our opinion — and for Valentine’s Day, Lakewood has its special Raspberry Temptress on many North Texas taps. But perhaps the best place to check it out is Flying Saucer Draught Emporium, which is not only featuring the beer on its Valentine’s “Sweets and Treats” menu — it will also be serving Raspberry Temptress ice cream with a black-cherry fizz. Other desserts will include chocolate mousse, caramel and sea-salt crepes (a new addition to the Saucer’s regular menu), Mud Island torte, and a beer float that will involve a stout combined with vanilla ice cream. Craft beers will include the Raspberry Temptress, of course, along with the newly tapped Six Point Sweet Action, as well as Southern Tier Creme Brulee Stout and Choklat, Young’s Double Chocolate Stout and — well, there’s more, but we don’t have that much room. And we’re getting thirsty. 111 E. Third St., Fort Worth, 817-336-7470; beerknurd.com

Love to laugh at Hyena’s, Improv

Hyena’s Comedy Nightclub is offering a $45-per-couple Valentine’s Day package that includes a half-dozen long-stemmed roses, a champagne toast, chocolate-covered strawberries and preferred seating in the showroom. In Fort Worth, Angel Salazar will perform at the 8 and 10:30 p.m. shows (if you want to skip the Valentine’s Day package, admission is $10); in Dallas, JR Brow does the same times ($10-$15 for the non-Valentine’s package). 425 Commerce St., Fort Worth, 817-877-5233; 5321 E. Mockingbird Lane, No. 200 (in Mockingbird Station), Dallas, 214-823-5233; www.hyenas comedynightclub.com.

At the Arlington Improv, Jay Phillips of Def Comedy Jam fame hosts a Love & Laughter night, with shows at 8 and 10:30 p.m. Couples packages are $100 and include dinner, VIP seating for the show, a champagne toast and a rose. Regular tickets start at $17. 309 Curtis Mathes Way, Arlington. 817-635-5555. improv.com

Get Lucky at Lucky Strike

From Friday through Monday, bar-and-bowling alley Lucky Strike is running a cheeky promotion: If you’re in a happy couple and you bowl a perfect game, you’ll win a wedding reception at Lucky Strike (bowling shirts instead of tuxes!). But if you’ve been dumped and you bowl a perfect game, you’ll win “an epic break-up party” (no gutter language!) to help you get over your ex. Each event will consist of a three-hour reception in a VIP space, food and beverage package, complimentary bowling and a DJ for up to 50 guests. Of course, one of you has to roll a perfect game first, and that’s not easy. 2845 W. Seventh St., Fort Worth, 817-566-1470; www .bowlluckystrike.com/locations/texas/fortworth.

Ricki Derek and Rick Blaine at the Lakewood

A Valentine’s Day Double Feature at Dallas’ historic Lakewood Theater begins with crooner Ricki Derek and his quartet doing classic love songs, followed by a screening of one of the all-time great movies, Casablanca, starring Humphrey Bogart as nightclub owner Rick Blaine, possibly the best illustration ever that a cynic is really just a wounded romantic. 8:30 p.m. Friday (doors open 7:30), Lakewood Theater, 1825 Abrams Parkway, Dallas. $20-$30. 214-821-7469; lakewoodtheater.com.

Modern romance at the Modern

Sure, you could get all romantic and see wide-release movies such as Endless Love and About Last Night (Note: If you know these movies are remakes and your date doesn’t, there might not be a future for you). But the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth is offering an interesting mix of movies this weekend. One is a free showing at 8:30 p.m. Friday of one of the biggest “date movies” of the ’60s, Claude Lelouch’s A Man and a Woman (pairs of tickets will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis beginning at 10 a.m. Friday at the Modern’s front desk). Contrast that with the decidedly unromantic Iranian movie The Past, about secrets revealed when a French woman asks her recalcitrant Iranian husband for a divorce (6 p.m. Friday; 5 p.m. Saturday; 11:30 a.m., 2 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. Sunday. $6-9, half-price for first Sunday showing). Café Modern is offering a Valentine’s dinner, beginning at 5 p.m. Friday, for $49.95 per person (tips and drinks not included); to see if any seating is available, call 817-840-2157 or visit themodern.org.

A serving of sweet Corn at BBT

Singer, KFWR/95.9 FM “The Ranch” personality (and former DFW.com cover girl) Charla Corn will headline a Valentine’s Day dinner and show in the 81 Club at Billy Bob’s Texas. There’ll be an all-you-can-eat buffet, and a 25-cent kissing booth as well. $50 per person. Also Friday: Fort Worth’s Delbert McClinton and Glen Clark will put on a 10:30 p.m. show for the hometown crowd. $15-$30. 2520 Rodeo Plaza, Fort Worth. 817-624-7117; www.billybobstexas.com.

Que sera, Sera

In addition to its usual menu, Forest Park restaurant Sera Dining & Wine will have some special Valentine’s specials through Saturday: Whole roasted snapper with harissa butter, cauliflower “cous cous,” pistachios and persimmon; 72-hour beef short rib with creamed spinach Catalana; and a chocolate Napoleon for dessert. Reservations aren’t necessary but are highly recommended. 2418 Forest Park Blvd., Fort Worth; 817-927-7372; www.facebook.com/SeraFW.

Make your heart jump — in fear!

Many people think Valentine’s Day is a little frightening, but Cutting Edge Haunted House is taking that to the next level by opening 8-10 p.m. Friday and Saturday for “A Candlelit Night of Horror.” “Experience the Bear Butcher and his gnarly blade seeking out his lustful and obsessive revenge!” says the description on a YouTube preview video. We’re already terrified. $20-$35. 1701 E. Lancaster Ave., Fort Worth. 817-348-8444; www.cuttingedge hauntedhouse.com.

Bedford’s Moxley Manor Haunted House is also after your heart this weekend for a Valentine’s Day Massacre featuring “a wicked kind of love.” $17-$25. 8-10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 510 Harwood Road, Suite O, Bedford. 682-231-1313; http://moxleymanor.com.

Latin Energy Valentine’s Day Party

Leave it to unique, electic radio station KNON/89.3 to come up with something a little different. This Latin freestyle/conjunto party will feature freestyle artist Danny Damian and Leo de Leon, as well as KNON personalities Daniel Boom, DJ Kane, Miss Kue, DJ Phaze and Dus. 8 p.m. Saturday, Players Club, 4444 W. Illinois Ave., Dallas. For details, listen to KNON or visit knon.org.
