The Dallas Mavericks Dancers released the 2014 edition of their annual calendar during the Mavs home game against the Portland Trail Blazers on Saturday evening at American Airlines Center.
In a market that has become commonplace with beautiful ladies to be clad in bikinis on exotic beaches for calendars, the Mavs marketing team decided to do something different this year. After multiple brainstorming sessions, they arrived at the idea of a 1950s-’60s-style pinup calendar featuring all 22 of this year’s Mavs Dancers.
“We all looked like 1950s pinup models,” said this year’s calendar cover model, first-year Mavs Dancer Kathryn (the dancers use their just their first names). “We all had inspiration from pictures taken back in the ’50s and it was really fun to get out of our element and do something completely different.”
The photo shoot took place in a private studio near the Mavs’ corporate headquarters in Deep Ellum over a three-day period in mid-September, with the ladies scheduled to shoot for a couple of hours in pairs and individually. Dallas Mavericks photographer Danny Bollinger did the shooting with the hair and makeup provided by Toni & Guy.
“The experience at the beach was very different,” said third-year Mavs Dancer Meghan, who appeared on the cover of the 2012 calendar shot on location in Barbados.
“This calendar was shot in a studio and I had an outfit that was very ‘Marilyn Monroe,’” Meghan said. “It was very glamorous and a lot of fun, where the other calendar was more seductive and was dependent on outdoor elements such as the sunset.”
As many people do when they open up a calendar, I skipped to my birthday month — September — and found recent Sports Illustrated Cheerleader of the Week Chantel as the model of what I personally consider to be the best month of the year.
“I am very happy how the calendar turned out,” said third-year veteran Chantel, who also appears on the back cover of the calendar. “I think it turned out very classy, yet sexy at the same time.”
The Dallas Mavericks Dancers Calendar is now available for $12.95 at the Ultimate Fanshop at NorthPark Center, American Airlines Center fan shops and online at mavgear.com.
