Behind the scenes of the Allen Americans Ice Angels calendar shoot

Posted 7:20am on Saturday, Dec. 14, 2013

The Allen Americans Ice Angels, the popular dance team for the defending Central Hockey League champion Allen Americans, shot their second annual calendar in a day-long photo shoot at the Dallas Yacht Club. While the pictures were shot over a 12-hour period, it was anything but a one-day job.

Coming on the heels of the positive response to last year's Western-style calendar, Ice Angels photographer James Higgins contacted Mike Weaver at the Dallas Yacht Club with the idea of taking the production to another level. Weaver, along with his wife Ginger, put together three large motor yachts and and the largest sailboat in the area for the photo shoot. Each of the boats were over 50 feet and had refrigerators, couches and Wi-Fi.

On Oct. 2, call time for all 12 of the Ice Angels -- veterans Brooklyn, Rachel, Amy, Brittney and Casey and rookies Brieana, Yijiao, Rose, Alexandra, Julia, Vivian and Amanda -- was 6:30 a.m. with shooting beginning just before sunrise on land. The morning was overcast, with only a teasing of blue sky peeking through. But after Weaver held a safety meeting before everyone got on the boats, a picturesque crystal blue sky emerged.

"James Higgins and DJP creative crew shot for over 12 hours to create this amazing calendar and get the perfect shots," Ice Angels Choreographer/Director Stephanie DiBiase-Wheat said. "This calendar was done with beauty, class and poise."

Higgins had made multiple visits to the Dallas Yacht Club to scout locations with each particular shot based on the individual's swimsuit that was selected during the ladies' 'swimsuit party' that was held several weeks before the shoot. For the shoot itself, the ladies trained by doing boot camps at the Dallas Power House of Dance to ensure they looked their very best.

"Shooting this calendar was different than others I've previously shot because everyone on the team was together for a one day shoot and it turned into an amazing bonding experience," said Brieana, a former cheerleader with the NFL's San Diego Chargers in her first season with the Ice Angels. "In addition, being able to select our own swimsuits helped boost everyone's confidence and made everyone more comfortable in front of the camera."

The Ice Angels are holding their official calendar release party at Game On Sports Bar & Grill immediately following the Americans home game on Dec. 13 against Missouri. Game On is located across Stacy Rd. from the Allen Events Center in the Village at Fairview.
