Preston’s picks: Kanye West at American Airlines Center

Posted 7:17am on Wednesday, Dec. 04, 2013

Kanye West at American Airlines Center

The one-man headline machine known as Kanye West brings his first solo tour in five years to North Texas this week, taking time out between releasing videos that break the Internet, quarreling with interviewers and griping about the fashion industry’s cold shoulder to focus on his day job: making music. West’s current tour is in support of his polarizing album Yeezus, released earlier this year (for my money, one of the year’s few bright lights) and is reportedly jammed full of impressive setpieces, not the least of which is a towering mountain West reportedly scales. And, hey, there’s even controversy at the merch booth! With Kendrick Lamar.

8 p.m. Friday. American Airlines Center, Dallas. $39.50-$199.50.

Preservation Hall Jazz Band at Meyerson Symphony Center

Take a break from Silent Night and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and inject a little Creole Christmas attitude into your holiday with the legendary Preservation Hall Jazz Band. The New Orleans-based outfit, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2012, released its first album of original music (titled That’s It!) this year. But the focus on this trip through North Texas will be seasonal cheer — a little joyeux noel — with bandleader Ben Jaffe and the ace musicians of Preservation Hall bringing a French Quarter flair to our neck of the woods.

8 p.m. Thursday. Meyerson Symphony Center, Dallas. $20-$129.

We now have a new, simpler way for you to enter and search for events, at listings.dfw.com. As always, when you submit an event to appear online, it will also be available for us in our print publication. But now you can simply enter your event and provide an email address, rather than creating a separate account and registering. Our new listings tool is still a work in progress, so we appreciate your patience as we fine-tune it. Please contact us at hsvokos@dfw.com if you have any questions or concerns.
