Pentatonix’s latest: ‘Little Drummer Boy’

Posted 11:39am on Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2013

Even if you’re the kind of person (ahem) who wishes that the Christmas stuff would at least wait till after Thanksgiving, it’s hard to resist when Pentatonix, the a cappella group founded by Arlington Martin grads Mitch Grassi, Scott Hoying and Kirstie Maldonado, turns its voices toward Christmas carols.

The group is currently touring Europe, but found time to post a new video of Little Drummer Boy on YouTube on Monday, and it’s already at more than 2 million views. The song, from PTXmas Deluxe (an extended version of last year’s PTXmas), features all five singers taking at least one turn at lead vocal -- including Kevin Olusola and Avi Kaplan, whom we’re more used to seeing handling rhythm.

Of course, Kaplan and Olusola still do the rhythm parts, and they’re impressive -- especially Olusola, who provides a lot of the “drums” for this Drummer Boy. And the whole group takes the song on a sweet, slow burn that builds to a strong climax.
