Each year around this time, we have the child-like pleasure of getting to look through a few hundred photos and essays from our readers, telling us why they think their dog, cat or … poison dart frog is the Model Pet of DFW.

And with this labor of love always comes the agony of choosing. Because they’re all cute. They’re all somebody’s model pet.

But when it comes down to it, we make our tough choices: One judge may be swayed by a cool photo; another may be moved by a heartfelt or comedic essay. In the end, we vote, and determine the winners — one for each of three categories: dog, cat and “alternative” pet. (You can check out the full slideshow of entries at DFW.com/pets.)

This year’s raft of more than 175 entries inspired us, and made us laugh and stand in awe of the resilience of pets (and their humans), and the power of love. With that, we give you the Model Pets of DFW, Class of 2013.

To see our Model Pet issue in print, check it out in DFW.com magazine, either inside the Friday Star-Telegram, or in free racks throughout the Metroplex.
