DFW.com’s 2013 Hot Issue: Red, white and sizzling

Posted 1:52am on Thursday, Aug. 29, 2013

Anyone who has lived or spent much time here knows that DFW weather can be a tad unpredictable.

Take 2013, for example: The winter never really got cold, and summer, usually a safe bet to be sizzling every day, had been unseasonably mild up until the past couple of weeks.

But unlike our fickle weather, you can always count on the DFW.com Hot Issue, arriving at the end of each summer, to introduce you to some of the hottest people in North Texas.

In this fourth edition, you’ll meet two NBA dancers and an NFL player, and get up close and personal with two TV personalities. Our Insanity fitness trainer will get your heart rate going, but never fear, we have a resident doctor and nurse on call, too. If that’s not enough, we also have a bikini model, the owner of an expanding energy drink empire and a former Miss Fort Worth.

So even if this summer hasn’t set any records, the Hot Issue is ready to bring the heat.

Kathryn Dunn

Day job: Marketing coordinator for a formalwear manufacturer

Dream job: Utilize my speech communications degree from Baylor and public-speaking skills to become a TV personality.

You may recognize her as: A former Miss Fort Worth.

Interesting fact about her: When I was 12, I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, a chronic inflammatory disorder that affected my back, shoulders and neck. After adopting a gluten-free diet and daily exercise routine, I was able to achieve remission. Eleven years later, I am able to function, and even dance, pain-free. I developed a program, Healthy Kids for a Healthy Future, where I teach elementary-age children how to become stronger through nutrition and exercise.

Does a guy who is not rich and famous have a realistic chance to go out with you? Of course. If a guy has a great personality, high integrity, and I can be myself around him, he is a keeper!

What’s the worst way for a guy to approach you? I think some guys are still stuck in their childhood mentality where they act like a jerk towards a girl they like. If a guy approaches me acting like a jerk, I turn the other way quickly!

Fantasy person to date? Someone who is handsome, funny, intelligent, nice, polite… He has to exist out there somewhere, right?

What’s your perfect night out: Grabbing my cowboy boots and best friends for a night out in the Stockyards and two-stepping at Billy Bob’s.

Favorite TV show: Family Feud with Steve Harvey. My family and I always play along.

Favorite movie that made you laugh: How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days

Favorite movie that made you cry: Seeking a Friend for the End of the World. I was expecting it to be a funny movie, but it ended up being really heartwarming and inspiring. It reminded me how important family and loved ones are.

Favorite sports team and player: Dallas Mavericks. Dirk Nowitzki has been my favorite player since I was 8.

Ideal spot for a summer vacation: I love historical Texas towns, and a couple summers ago some friends and I went to Gruene, home of Texas’ oldest dance hall. We shopped in the historic district, floated the river and saw Ray Wylie Hubbard live in concert. It was the perfect Texas summer vacation.

Favorite patio in DFW: Lately my girlfriends and I have been going to Sfuzzi for our girls’-night-out dinners. Fun atmosphere, great service, and you have got to try the Texas eggs and bacon pizza.

Hobbies: Dance, working out, public speaking, social media, “bedazzling”, and eating gluten-free!

What’s in your purse right now that no one would believe? A Taser. Better I’m safe and they’re sorry!

Best part of your wardrobe that you hate to put away after Labor Day? I live in my sundresses! It always pains me to have to put them away for the winter!

Favorite summer cocktail: You can’t go wrong with an authentic margarita on a hot summer day.

Where might we see you on a summer afternoon in DFW? Out on a jog or at an outdoor boot camp class.

What are you looking forward to this fall when it cools off? My favorite way to spend a cool fall night is to be outside by a fire pit with some Texas country playing in the background. That brings back some of my favorite college memories.

Dwayne Harris

Day job: Dallas Cowboys wide receiver, kick returner and punt returner

Dream job: To own a boutique that sells shoes and clothes. I am a big collector of clothes and shoes. I’d like to have locations in Los Angeles, Miami, Dallas, New York City and Atlanta, eventually going global to places where fashion is like a statement.

Favorite place in DFW to hang out: Jinbeh right by the Omni in Las Colinas. I am there pretty much every day. It is a cool hibachi setup with great food and great people. I don’t have a lot of family here [he was born in Atlanta] and they treat me like family.

Favorite movie: I have several. Love & Basketball, the original Friday and the Batman series.

Favorite TV show: Cartoons. They keep me connected to my inner child.

Favorite patio in DFW: Sfuzzi in Uptown

Favorite guilty-pleasure food: Being a pro athlete, I have to be really careful with what I eat. I have not had candy in a long time, but I do love Gummi bears and Skittles.

Where might we find you on a summer afternoon on DFW? I am all over Dallas and Fort Worth looking for the newest and best spots. I’m kind of like a “Where’s Waldo” in the DFW area.

Best summer memory? I recently held my first summer camp June 1 in Greenville, N.C., [where he attended college] and had more than 500 kids come out. We had a great time and just seeing the kids’ faces was fantastic. That’s my best memory in my life, period.

Does a girl who does not look like a supermodel have a chance of going out with you? Possibly. She does not have to look like a supermodel, but she needs to have some beautiful features about herself. A good personality is obviously a huge factor for me.

Hobbies: I can cook a little bit. I have my own chef’s coat. My favorite thing to cook is steak. Once you can cook a good steak, life is easy.

Who is the person you admire most and why? My parents. They have both been through a lot in their lives and I look at myself as an extension of them. My dad and mom are still together and I commend them on that. There are a lot of families whose parents split and we’ve had our differences but they never gave up on me and continued to encourage me and push me throughout my while life and are the reason I am now playing in the NFL.

Are your teammates going to give you a hard time about appearing in the Hot Issue? If anybody will bust my chops, it will be Dez Bryant. I can already hear it. In fact, I can play it in my head and it will be pretty funny. I am going to laugh along with him, and then I am going to laugh at him.

Dream job: CSI agent, or detective.

You may recognize her from: The back of the Pompis energy drink delivery vans. Supposedly I’m the “face” of Pompis, but one of my other “assets” is on the van. Also, I have appeared in Hooters calendars, and even on a poker chip at their casino in Las Vegas — unfortunately, it was only the $5 chip (I should be worth more).

Interesting fact about her: I have an identical twin.

My best feature: I have many great ASSets! Lol

Does a guy who is not rich and famous have a real chance to go out with you? No, because I’m married to the best guy ever. He’s not rich or famous. But he does pretty well, though.

Favorite place for a summer vacation: Israel is one of the truly beautiful places I have been to in the world. One of my business partners and his fiancee got married last year in Israel. We took the tour of Israel from Bethlehem to Nazareth and Jerusalem and spent some time in Tel Aviv. Now Tel Aviv is like New York City meets Miami. Parties get going at 1 a.m. and go to sunrise and then everyone heads to a beach party.

How different is the world over there as opposed to here in DFW? We are so sheltered here and I realized it with the crazy things that happen there on a daily basis. The people over there have a zest for life and when they get out and party, they cut loose because they could truly be experiencing their last breath at any moment.

What was it like appearing in the original Hot Issue? I received a lot of attention, and so did my product. It gave us the opportunity to expand into DFW locations. And we’ve expanded to 11 states and nine countries in South and Central America.

Fantasy person to date: I’ve always had a mad crush on Enrique Iglesias.
