Find out how things shook out in the Readers' Bracket, and click here to go straight to the Readers' Choice voting. And if you're a burger nut who'd like a chance to help us judge the Final Four, click here to find out how you can. Deadline is Friday!

Every year at the NCAA tournament, a Cinderella team makes a run. It’s part of the DNA of March Madness, and why it has become a rite of spring, even for the most casual basketball fan.

Upsets are seared into the makeup of our burger bracket, too. And in Round 1, as many of the top seeds (Charley’s, Chop House, Hopdoddy) staved off valiant challenges, one shocking defeat is likely to overshadow any of the Burger Battle’s other juicy storylines.

Our judges fanned out across the Metroplex recently to devour burgers in 16 Round 1 matchups, and a few trends emerged. The No. 2 seeds – Rodeo Goat, Kincaid’s, Dutch’s and Maple & Motor – flexed their burger brawn. Some former Final Four competitors stumbled (Pappas Burger, Five Guys and Jakes). And one out-of-nowhere underdog emerged: Burger Xtreme, the No. 8 seed in the Mustard Region, played its way into the main draw and then, in a first round matchup for the ages, edged out a former champion and created bedlam in the bracket.

So, we move forward into uncharted territory without one of our burger stalwarts, but also fascinated by the Xtreme possibilities in Round 2.

Here are our judges’ takes on all 16 first round matchup. (As per the rules, judges ate at each burger spot on the same day, usually within a few hours’ time frame.) In the Readers’ Choice bracket, Fred’s is still very much alive and, so is Five Guys. To vote in Round 2, go to dfw.com/burgers. Voting will re-open on Thursday.

And now, the results of Round 1. (Click on each region -- Mustard, Pickle, Bacon or Ketchup -- to find a breakdown of each region's matchups.)
