ALLEN -- The 78th Miss Texas Scholarship Pageant was held this past week and culminated on Saturday evening with the crowning of Miss North Texas Ivana Hall as Miss Texas 2013. WFAA's Ron Corning and Miss Texas 1982, Gloria Gilbert Barron co-hosted the evening's festivities at the Allen Event Center.
This event is an official preliminary to the Miss America Scholarship Pageant -- not to be confused with Miss Texas USA Ali Nugent who went on to be 4th runner-up in the Miss USA Pageant. This competition was founded in 1936 by a "group of civic-minded citizens concerned about higher education." The Miss America Organization is now the largest donor of scholarship assistance for young women, awarding over $45 million annually.
The 2013 Miss Texas featured 48 contestants from across the state of Texas competing in the categories of private interview, lifestyle and fitness, talent, evening gown and onstage question. Saturday night's show began with the announcement of the Top 15 contestants who would soon appear in the 'Lifestyle and Fitness" section, better known as the swimsuit portion of the night. Next up, each of the ladies appeared in an evening gown followed by another cut down to the Top 10.
The Top 10 each performed in the 'Talent' category ranging from singing songs such as Impossible Dream and Summertime to playing Flight of the Bumblebee on the piano and a lyrical dance to Your Dream Will Be My Dream. While each of the performances were very good in their own right, the time had arrived for the cut down the top five.
The five finalists remained on-stage and were each asked one question from the judges' panel on topics that included the environment, banning smoking in public places and racism in our current society. With the crowd on the edge of their seats, it was time for the announcements: Fourth runner-up was Miss Sugarland, Callie Thompson, third runner-up was Miss Keller, Kaylee Killingsworth, second runner-up was Miss Arlington, Michelle Hanson and the first runner-up was Miss DFW, Christine Tang.
Miss Texas 2012, Danae Couch placed the crown on Ivana Hall, signifying that she was the winner of the 2013 Miss Texas Pageant. She also received a $10,000 scholarship, the use of an Infiniti from Grubbs Infiniti to be driven throughout her reign and an apartment from Residences of North Dallas. Hall will compete for Miss America in Atlantic City on September 15, broadcast live on ABC.
