Disney Channel to hold open casting call in Texas

Posted 2:40pm on Monday, Jul. 01, 2013

A few years ago, Selena Gomez and her mother drove from their DFW home to Austin for a Disney Channel casting call during a nationwide talent search. Casting directors liked what they saw and picked Gomez from thousands of kids, even though they didn’t have a project for her. Gomez shot a couple of pilots before she was asked to audition for Alex, the lead character in the sitcom The Wizards of Waverly Place. Even before the show aired, Gomez was attracting Internet attention; since then, the Grand Prairie-raised singer-actress has become one of the channel’s biggest success stories.

This little anecdote illustrates why, if you have or are a talented tween or teen, it might be worth it to take a four-hour-or-so road trip from DFW to San Antonio on July 27 or 28, when Disney Channel and Disney XD will hold an open call for actors, singers and dancers aged 10 to 17.

DFW has been well represented on the Disney Channel, with stars such as Demi Lovato, Debby Ryan, Jennifer Stone and Mitchel Musso all coming from North Texas.

Auditions will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 27 for youths with last names beginning with A through M, and the same times on July 28 for those with last names beginning with N through Z. Auditions will take place at the San Antonio Marriott Rivercenter, 101 Bowie St. in downtown San Antonio. Parking will not be available at the hotel, but there are several parking facilities nearby.

An application and monologue will be provided upon arrival, and minors -- in other words, everyone in the audition age range -- must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. For more information, go here.
