FRISCO -- As a sports fan, I am always looking for new spots around DFW to hang out with friends and watch the action. Sometimes I hit these places in their opening weeks and other times I stumble upon those that have been around for seven years, but for one reason or another I have yet to discover them.
Case in point is the 3rd Base Sports Bar & Grill located in the parking lot of the massive Stonebriar Centre across from the Dr Pepper Ballpark and Frisco Convention Center. Being that I live in Fort Worth, it is a rare occasion that I make the hour-long trip up to Frisco. However, a quiet Wednesday evening gave me an excuse to venture up to visit one of my buddies and we decided on 3rd Base to watch the Texas Rangers game.
Upon entry, I noticed there was a plethora of flat screen TVs -- there are a total of 42 -- and a ton of attractive ladies working throughout the spot. By pure luck, we stumbled in on the weekly 'Wednesday theme night' and this particular evening's theme was bikinis. Other themes have included lingerie, hot legs and school-girls.
Since it appeared that I was one of the last to learn of this popular phenomenon, the place was packed enough that we found ourselves fortunate to grab a seat at the bar. We chatted up a few of the place's regulars and rather than going the obvious route and comparing it to Hooters, Bone Daddy's, Bikinis and Twin Peaks, they chose to liken its atmosphere to the classic show Cheers. According to our new pals, with 3rd Base being a family-owned restaurant/bar, it is able to avoid some of the more corporate aspects of its nearby competitors and maintain a more relaxed vibe.
The menu includes bar food such as burgers, salads, chicken strips, wings, BBQ ribs, tacos, chicken fried steak and sirloin steak. Unlike most sports bars, there is an extensive sushi offering including the 3rd Base Roll with smoked salmon, cream cheese, avocado tempura with chopped jalapeños and spicy sauce. They also have daily specials including Texas Tuesdays that feature $9.99 half-rack ribs, $2.50 Shiner drafts, $2 Lone Star bottles and $4 Texas Republic Tequila.
The Rangers ended up winning the game and we found a spot to add to the rotation of sports bars to hang out while enjoying good food and cold beverages. And yes, the scenery was pretty good, too!
