Eats Beat: For winning barbecue, Texans head to Jambo’s in Rendon

Is Rendon the new Austin?

I’m only half kidding.

Jambo’s BBQ Shack has the beef and the buzz to make rural Rendon the next destination for barbecue fiends.

Surrounded by eight popular barbecue stands, including two from Texas Monthly’s Top 50, Jambo’s is becoming a line-out-the-door stand like Austin’s famous shops or Dallas’ Pecan Lodge.

Competition champions Jamie Geer of Jambo Pits and Phillip Lujan of Talk Texan Bar-B-Q teamed up to open Jambo’s next to a Sonic Drive-In on East Farm Road 1187 between Mansfield and Burleson.

Jambo’s sold out 16 racks of hickory-smoked pork ribs at lunch Friday, and has been sold out of meat every day.

The signature item is the “Jambo Texan,” a towering sandwich of sliced and chopped beef, pulled pork, a rib, bologna, and Kiolbassa sausage from San Antonio.

“We decided we’d both put all our best meats into one sandwich,” Lujan said.

Geer said: “We just try to put all our heart and soul into our barbecue. We’re just two competition cooks — we don’t know what the future will bring.”

Jambo’s is open Tuesdays through Saturdays for lunch until it’s gone; 5460 E. Farm Road 1187 (from Interstate 20, take Forest Hill Drive south 7 miles), 817-478-2277, jambosbbqshack.com.

To make a tour of it, try Texas Monthly Top 50 spot Cousin’s Bar-B-Q, 6262 McCart Ave., Fort Worth; sausage stop Longoria’s BBQ, 100 Christopher Drive, Everman; and D Magazine’s top-ranked Off the Bone BBQ, 5144 Mansfield Highway, Forest Hill.

Also worth a try: Hickory Stick BBQ, 900 E. Enon Ave., Everman (which has a great old Underwood’s sign); bologna and homemade chili at Kenneth’s True Pit Bar-B-Q, 4645 Dick Price Road, south of Kennedale; barbecue and steaks at the new Old Texas Brewing Co. in Burleson; and long-ago favorite Casstevens Cash and Carry, 5209 Farm Road 2738, Lillian.

Steaks aplenty for Dad

Is Dad not a big deal anymore?

Sure he is. But some prime steakhouses won’t open early for Father’s Day lunch.

Two exceptions: Mercury Chophouse in downtown Fort Worth will open at 11 a.m., and Ruth’s Chris Steak House will open at 1:30 p.m.

Most restaurants had reservations available this week, including Lucile’s and Reata in Fort Worth and Dallas mainstays such as Al Biernat’s or Marquee Grill. (The Blue Mesa Grill locations will start their buffet at 9 a.m.)

The Torch is raised

A new location of Austin cult favorite Torchy’s Tacos is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner daily at 2175 E. Southlake Blvd.
