It’s a dirty -- or at least occasionally messy -- job, but someone’s gotta do it: Every five years or so, Texas Monthly sends an army of food tasters across Texas to determine the state’s Top 50 Barbecue Joints. Which, as you might imagine, receives quick disagreement from barbecue fans from all over (just check the comments section at the linked post).
The quest was led by Texas Monthly food editor Patricia Sharpe and by its first barbecue editor, Daniel Vaughn, whose Twitter handle is BBQsnob (Dallas-based Vaughn was the subject of a recent DFW.com profile).
You can view the whole list at the above link, of course, but if you want to know about DFW places that made the cut, here they are: Cousin’s and Longoria’s BBQ in Fort Worth (Cousin’s also made the list in 2008); Bartley’s in Grapevine; Lockhart Smokehouse and Pecan Lodge in Dallas; and Hutchins BBQ in McKinney. Mineral Wells-area joint Hashknife on the Chisholm is also on the list (as it was in 2008).
