Preston's picks: Dave Matthews Band at Gexa Energy Pavilion; Barry Manilow at Verizon Theatre

Posted 12:00am on Wednesday, May. 15, 2013

Dave Matthews Band at Gexa Energy Pavilion

A staple of the summer concertgoing season, the Dave Matthews Band has, the last few years, taken to starting its epic tours in Texas. The 2013 jaunt across America is no exception, and Dallas will play host to the septet’s second show of a tour stretching into September. The veteran rockers (DMB is easing into its third decade of making music) are still supporting last year’s excellent Away from the World, which reunited the band with producer Steve Lillywhite, who oversaw the group’s first three studio albums. With Mariachi El Bronx.

7 p.m. Saturday. Gexa Energy Pavilion, Dallas. $40.50-$75.

Barry Manilow at Verizon Theatre

He is the man who gave us Mandy. He took everyone to the Copacabana. Barry Manilow has moved more than 80 million records worldwide, and given his reach (the singer-songwriter/composer’s music has turned up everywhere from TV to the theater), it’s safe to say Manilow is one of the most influential pop acts of the last half-century. As he prepares to turn 70 next month, the Grammy- and Emmy-winner is showing no signs of slowing down, releasing his latest studio album, 15 Minutes, in 2011 and having wrapped up a concert series on Broadway in March.

8 p.m. Friday. Verizon Theatre, Grand Prairie. $9.99-$139.99.
