It doesn’t seem like that long ago -- but it was nearly six years -- that I interviewed Selena Gomez on the set of her Disney Channel sitcom, The Wizards of Waverly Place, before the show premiered and -- well, I’d say it introduced Gomez to the world, but she was already getting attention from magazines like People and Entertainment Weekly (and she’d been on Barney and Friends).
She was 15 at the time of the interview, and as I recall, looked pretty tomboyish in a baseball cap and sweats. I was primarily interested in talking to her because she’s from DFW -- born in Grand Prairie, grew up in and around Dallas -- and because Disney Channel shows have a way of making their female stars huge.
Flash forward to this week, when the now 20-year-old Gomez -- who has done some image-adjusting through Harmony Korine’s movie Spring Breakers -- is the No. 2 entry on Maxim’s latest “Hot 100” list (No. 1 is Miley Cyrus -- see what being on the Disney Channel can do for you?). Gomez beat out such big names as Rihanna (No. 3) and Mila Kunis (No. 4) as well as fellow Disney Channel alumni as Ashley Tisdale (No. 7) and Vanessa Hudgens (No. 9, and one of Gomez’s Spring Breakers co-stars).
Gomez’s friend (and, yes, fellow Disney Channel alum) Demi Lovato, who grew up in Colleyville, is ranked No. 26. Euless native Sarah Shahi is No. 33 -- and has one of the most revealing photos. Speaking of cheeky, Maxim’s list-compilers also found a spot for Manti Te’o’s Fake Girlfriend -- at No. 69.
