Sideline Group dance audition workshop

Posted 12:54pm on Sunday, Apr. 21, 2013

The Sideline Group held its audition workshop this past weekend at the Prestige Dance and Performing Arts Centre in Lewisville. The workshop was designed with the sole purpose of getting the ladies ready for the upcoming audition season that includes the opportunity to become a member of the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, Dallas Mavericks Dancers, Dallas Cowboys Rhythm & Blue Dancers, Dallas Stars Ice Girls and the many other professional dance teams in DFW.

They assembled an all-star cast of choreographers, directors and trainers including Dallas Mavericks Dancers director Mallory Mills, Dallas Cowboys Rhythm & Blue director Jenny Durbin Smith, fitness trainer Danielle Hinson, former choreographer of the Chicago Bulls and Indiana Pacers dancers Keith Clark, Allen Americans Ice Angels director/choreographer Stephanie DiBiase-Wheat and former Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader and Dallas Mavericks Dancer Justine Phillips Orf.

The 20 ladies who attended the day-long workshop began the day with training on fitness and stretch and dance techniques of kicks, turns, jumps and leap. Next up on the agenda was the all-important social media segment taught by Danielle Hinson and how the ladies should treat it as their business card and be very careful about how and what they post.

Choreography sessions began with Justine Phillips Orf bringing her experience of eight years with the DCC and three years with the DMD to novelty, jazz, kick and technique. Orf is currently an instructor at KJ Dance Designs in Plano. Jenny Durbin Smith taught the hip hop (after all, she is the director of the NFL's only hip-hop dance team with the Dallas Cowboys Rhythm & Blue Dancers). Stephanie Di Biase-Wheat did the 'hip hop/pom' portion followed by Mallory Mills teaching 'pom technique.'

In between all of the action, the experts held a panel discussion with the ladies where they discussed and took questions on image, proper etiquette and the ins and outs of the entire audition process. Since these are the people making the actual decisions on who gets cut and who makes the squad, the ladies received invaluable information. The day was not complete without hair and makeup consultations and photography sessions.
