We are shedding some big burger tears this week because Pop's Burgers & Grill, the winner of DFW.com's 2011 Burger Battle, has closed, according to a post on its Facebook page.
Honestly, we're still a bit shocked.
"Pops has officially closed the Trail lake location. We would like to thank everyone for your business and friendships for the last three years. Thank you and may God bless you," read the message posted On Pop's Facebook page Monday morning.
Pop's moved to its new, bigger location on Trail Lake Drive in southwest Fort Worth early in 2012, still riding the wave of its victory in the DFW.com Burger Battle. And initially it was packed.
But recently owner Russell House told us he'd seen a drop off in business and said that while the weekend business was strong, the weekday lunch and dinner crowds were not enough to cover his increased overhead.
The Facebook message left many devoted Pop's fans reeling, and wondering if the burger joint, which moved from a tiny strip-mall space on Benbrook Highway, might reopen at another location. But so far no word from House on getting back in the burger game.
