Preston's picks: Aaron Neville, Ellis Marsalis, plus Southern Culture on the Skids

Posted 9:58pm on Tuesday, Mar. 26, 2013

Aaron Neville and Ellis Marsalis at College Park Center

Get a double dose of 'Nawlins cheer with a pair of award-winning musical legends from the Big Easy -- singer Aaron Neville and pianist Ellis Marsalis. The two men are in town for the latest installment of the University of Texas at Arlington's Maverick Speakers Series. The 72-year-old Neville, recently striking out on his own with his new, doo-wop-inspired LP My True Story, and the 78-year-old Marsalis, whose latest effort is the more seasonal A New Orleans Christmas Carol, will participate in an audience Q&A after performing at the intimate College Park Center.

7:30 p.m. Tuesday. College Park Center, Arlington. $25.

Southern Culture on the Skids at Sons of Hermann Hall

Incredibly, this North Carolina-based trio is cruising past its 25th anniversary and still knocking out tunes steeped in rockabilly, surf rock and punk. Although it's been some years since the band's novelty single Camel Walk made its way up the charts, Southern Culture on the Skids has remained active, touring and recording, with its most recent effort, The Kudzu Ranch, released in 2010. Those attending can expect carefree good times, ever so slightly laced with irony and sporting pointy boots. With Boys Named Sue.

8 p.m. Thursday. Sons of Hermann Hall, Dallas. $15.
