IRVING -- On a picture-perfect afternoon at the prestigious Four Seasons Resort and Club in Las Colinas, Austria's Jurgen Melzer came away with the singles and doubles titles of the second annual Dallas Tennis Classic presented by Zodiac Watches.
Melzer defeated Denis Kudla, 6-4, 2-6, 6-1 for the singles title followed by teaming with Germany’s Philipp Petzschner later in the afternoon, as they defeated USA’s Eric Butorac & England’s Dominic Inglot, 6-3, 6-1. The Dallas Tennis Classic's position on the ATP tournament schedule between Indian Wells and Key Biscayne -- both of which are mandatory events for the top-50 ranked players -- translated into a very strong field that provided an entertaining week for tennis fans in DFW.
“If you have seen the draw, it could be any 250 tournament,” Melzer said. “I’m very happy with the way I’ve been playing here and I’ve got five matches under my belt. I’ve got confidence, and as you know, confidence is everything."
Local luminaries who came out to watch the tennis and support the tournament included Dallas Mavericks superstar Dirk Nowitzki and Dallas Stars great Marty Turco. Stars legend Mike Modano was on hand to present Melzer and Petzschner with Zodiac Watches as singles and doubles champions.
“I had a great time today,” said Modano. “I love the sport and it’s been a pleasure to be here representing Zodiac Watches at the Dallas Tennis Classic. This has been a fantastic week of tennis.”
Next up on the DFW tennis scene is the World Team Tennis with the new local team, the Texas Wild. The Wild, coached by Brent Haygarth and featuring the Bryan Brothers, will play throughout July at the Four Seasons.
