Bedford is now a burger destination.
By next week -- maybe sooner -- Twisted Root Burger Co. will open in the Bedford Meadows shopping center.
If Bedford doesn't exactly seem like the place for a hip Deep Ellum burger joint, consider that the Central Drive area is hungry for chef-driven restaurants.
After a half-dozen restaurants were demolished for freeway widening, Twisted Root opens in a city begging for anything different from Pappadeaux Seafood or Fuddruckers.
Chef Jason Boso brings Bedford its first Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives-featured restaurant. Root opened in Dallas and quickly gained fame for hand-spun shakes (liquor optional), hand-packed burgers and a clever choice of gourmet pickles.
The current "burger of the month" is topped with peanut butter and jalapenos. (Last month's included bacon and egg and was served on sliced glazed doughnuts.)
Twisted Root is expected to open this week. It'll serve lunch and dinner daily at 2820 Central Drive, 682-444-5650, twistedrootburgerco.com.
Another new Root is due in Fort Worth, with owners looking at property either on the south side or maybe near White Settlement Road on the near west side.
Buffalo West's makeover continues with a new chef.
Former country club chef Darrin Green leads the redesign and new menu at the west side steakhouse, formerly a steaks-and-tacos concept.
Buffalo West's new menu features a mixture of dishes such as catfish and pot roast with roast duck, steaks, pastas and seafood.
Owner Paul McKinney promises a Sunday brunch starting on Easter and lunch service returning in April.

The new patio is nearly finished at The Original Mexican Eats Cafe.
The patio completes a remodeling that started with a new bar and interior for the 85-year-old landmark.
Within about a month, dining tables will replace chugholes on the old rear parking lot.
If you've never gone back there, drive around the block on Byers Avenue from the Original, 4713 Camp Bowie Blvd.
In Dallas, LARK on the Park is open on Klyde Warren Park.
It's the newest concept from Flying Fish, Meddlesome Moth and Flying Saucer owner Shannon Wynne, who's also working on the new Bird Cafe coming to downtown Fort Worth.
LARK on the Park's menu includes smoked duck, a lamb shank, lighter "share" plates and a choice of vegetables.
