Curtain blaze at Bass Hall cancels ballet performance, no one injured

Posted 8:28pm on Saturday, Mar. 02, 2013

Apparently, the show cannot always go on.

A curtain caught fire two hours before a ballet performance at Bass Performance Hall in downtown Fort Worth on Saturday night, causing a last-minute cancellation of Texas Ballet's Theater's Lambarena and Voluntaries.

No injuries or structural damage were reported, and no patrons were in the building at the time, Dione Kennedy, president & CEO of Performing Arts Fort Worth, said in a statement.

Fire crews quickly extinguished the stage fire and were investigating the cause, said Richard Harrison, spokesman for the Fort Worth Fire Department. A damage estimate was not available.

Patrons arrived Saturday evening to flashing police lights and a high-pitched fire alarm, then were turned away.

Mark Hurtado and Erin Perkins, of Denton, had been looking forward to the ballet but said the cancellation would not ruin their evening.

"We'll just walk around and enjoy the night," Hurtado said. "And we'll be back in May."

Tickets can be exchanged at no cost for Sunday's 2 p.m. performance or for another ballet in May. Patrons can call 877-828-9200 for more information.
