ARLINGTON -- The 2013 Advanced Auto Parts Monster Jam Monster trucks event technically began at 7 p.m., but the action got underway at 2:30 with the Pit Party on the floor of Cowboys Stadium. The Pit Party allowed those who stopped by DFW Metro PCS locations to get their passes access to the event level to walk around on the dirt track and get photos with the Monster trucks and their drivers.
The sold-out standing room only crowd of over 80,000 was in for a treat that started with the UTI Racing championship featuring 20 trucks that race two at a time around the course. After three rounds, it came down to two of the Monster Jam's most popular drivers in the final round as Adam Anderson driving the Legend beat Ryan Huffaker in El Toro Loco.
The freestyle competition gave the drivers the ability to display the power of the Monster trucks by crushing cars, buses and basically anything they came across at Cowboys Stadium. Big Kahuna caught a lot of air on his jumps and Taryn Laskey in Monster Mutt Dalmation was impressive while scoring 20 points. In the end, with the three judges votes calculated, it was Jim Koehler in Avenger edging out the Legend and the Grave Digger 27-26 to win the freestyle championship.
The Monster Jam in Arlington was one of many monster truck events going on simultaneously including Oakland, New Orleans, Jacksonville and Winnipeg. The season culminates with the finals March 22-23 in Las Vegas.
