The Chop House Burger has a new home.
Chef Kenny Mills' steakhouse-quality burger is now also served at a second Chop House Burgers in Mansfield.
When Mills opened his first tiny burger stand in Arlington, his signature beef-brisket burger with steak sauce became a DFW.com Burger Battle finalist.
Now, that location has tripled in size. An even larger Chop House Steaks & Seafood will open soon nearby.
The newest Chop House Burgers opened this week on Farm Road 157 in Mansfield, bringing Mills' stylized burgers, homemade chili and gumbo to a burger-deprived neighborhood near U.S. 287.
Besides the signature applewood-bacon burger, the menu includes a 10 Pepper Burger with eight kinds of peppers, plus peppery Monterey Jack cheese and Tabasco mayo. Salads include a steakhouse-style blue-cheese wedge.
If you saw Chop House on Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives, you know it's popular for gumbo, and for pies and cakes from Bake It to the Limit.
One night this week, the bakery selection included Pantego's favorite red velvet cakes, plus chocolate pecan pie, brownies and cookies.
Chop House is open daily except Sundays. The new location is at 2860 Farm Road 157, near Turner-Warnell Road; chophouseburgers.com.
Another Burger Battle favorite is also a Texas favorite.
Fred's Texas Cafe finished third in the Texas Country Reporter TV show's "Best Burgers in Texas" poll, behind Alamo Springs Cafe in Fredericksburg and Chris Madrid's in San Antonio.
Fred's is a tourist favorite, apparently, for the location near the Cultural District and for the simple Fred Burger, dinner platters, fries and cold beer.
Fred's is open daily except Mondays at 915 Currie St., or daily including Mondays at 2730 Western Center Blvd.; fredstexascafe.com.
Country Reporter also listed two regional favorites first and second as having the best chicken-fried steaks in Texas: Mary's Cafe in Strawn and Jake & Dorothy's Cafe in Stephenville.
Mary's is at 119 Grant Ave. in downtown Strawn, about an hour and change west of Fort Worth. It's open for lunch and dinner nearly every day of the year; 254-672-5741.
Jake & Dorothy's is open every day at 406 E. Washington St. (Business U.S. 377), Stephenville; 254-965-5211, jakeanddorothyscafe.com.
The last Crystal's Pizza & Spaghetti will close this weekend in Irving.
The old Crystal's on Camp Bowie Boulevard was a 1980 landmark. The Irving location closes Sunday at 930 W. Airport Freeway; 972-579-0441.
A new takeout gyros-pita wraps stand normally wouldn't draw attention.
But the new gyros stand in downtown Arlington is much more.
GRIP Mediterranean Grill is a more casual, college-town cousin to the popular Mediterranean grills named Ali Baba in Dallas and Terra in Fort Worth.
It's open for lunch and dinner daily at 115 W. Second St.
