Maximum FX: North Texas studio aims for animation domination

When the folks at Reel FX are drafted by a studio to help with animation or visual effects, often they will find themselves focusing on small details that the average viewer may not even pay attention to -- unless those details were missing. Here's some of Reel FX's handiwork that you've probably seen but didn't even notice.

'Apocalypto'

Mel Gibson's Mayan-warrior melodrama featured scenes requiring actors walking and running bare-legged through mud and muck. The actors were actually wearing protective boots (to avoid injuries) and Reel FX digitally replaced the protected legs in post-production with bare ones. The company also added in spears.

'Spider-Man 2'

Reel FX provided rotoscoping (a technique of meshing live-action and computer-generated imagery) and worked on the film's color.

Katy Perry's 'Firework' video

Director Dave Meyers picked Reel FX to take care of the effects, which included visual effects supervisor Kevin Althans traveling to Budapest, Hungary, for the four-day shoot. An actual fireworks display was shot, and digital fireworks were added later. The video went on to win Video of the Year at the MTV VMAs in 2011.
