Once upon a time, way back in the 20th century, the day would start with a cup of coffee and a spin through the morning paper.
These days, info junkies are just as likely to wake up to a smartphone or tablet, and scroll through a myriad of social media sites to get their day going.
Digital delivery of information has upended not only the journalism and publishing industries, transmitting news almost as it is happening, but has given those plugged into Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Instagram and other services new access and insight into previously closed-off worlds.
Five years ago, it would've been unthinkable to follow events in real time without turning on the television, but now, everything from war zones to awards shows are chronicled as they happen, unfolding across screens around the world.
The medium is here to stay, too.
According to an article from the Huffington Post, citing a study from Infographic Labs, 175 million tweets were sent every day in 2012. Last year, social media consultant Jeff Bullas, cited in the same Huffington Post piece, reported 250 million photos were uploaded to Facebook every day. These sorts of mind-boggling stats underscore the primacy with which we consume social media, as well as how pervasive it has become in documenting our every day lives.
As with everything in life, some folks have a better handle on social media than others.
There have been surprises -- those people and places that have aggressively embraced the digital tools to bring friends, fans and customers closer to the person or brand -- and stumbles, but the brave new world of living, consuming and commenting on life online has prodded us to come up with a list -- our own riff on the power lists populating business and entertainment magazines -- of 65 North Texans worth adding to your social media feeds.
These are the individuals and institutions who are doing it right, split into different categories. (All follower totals are correct as of press time.) Following these people and places on Facebook and Twitter will help make you, like them, a social media powerhouse.
