Jane McGarry, who ended her 30-year-plus career at KXAS/Channel 5 last year, made her debut Thursday morning on rival station WFAA/Channel 8.
After a six-month hiatus from local TV news, McGarry has found a place on Channel 8's 9 a.m. talk/variety show, Good Morning Texas. At the top of the hour, host Paige McCoy Smith introduced McGarry as "someone you all know well," who would be launching a "series that we can all relate to."
The series -- which will air over a five-week period -- is called "Starting Over With Jane McGarry," certainly a fitting title for McGarry. She had spent more than 20 years as one of Channel 5's top anchors, but departed last summer in the wake of news about her DWI arrest in May. (Interestingly, it was Channel 8 that broke the news about McGarry's arrest.) She pleaded no contest to the charge.
After McCoy Smith introduced her, McGarry tied her TV return to the crux of the series: "I am thrilled to be making my own new start on North Texas television right here on Channel 8," she told viewers. "Thank you for the privilege of coming into your homes once again. In the weeks ahead, well be sharing the stories of some incredible people whove had to start over in their lives. I hope their success will inspire you with the challenges that you are or someday may be facing. After all, every single day, someone among us is starting over."
The "Starting Over" segment aired toward the end of the show, and told the story of Nick and Joann Stephens of Toler, who lost their beloved son in action in Afghanistan four months ago. The often-emotional segment focused on how friends and neighbors have helped the family carry on since Riley's passing.
Viewers heard from McGarry once more, at the end of Good Morning Texas, when she confessed to having a few performance jitters.
"It was great [being back on the air]," she said. "It's kind of like riding a bike, I guess, I mean, you have done it for a while, and it comes back slowly. I was a little bit nervous the first minute or so, I'll give you that.
"But it was a lot of fun. And I just wanted to say how grateful I am to be back in viewers' homes, and to be able to do something at Channel 8 that I think will really help people."
Stay tuned: McGarry's next "Starting Over" segment will air next week on Channel 8.
