New on DVD: 'The Bourne Legacy'

Posted 5:32pm on Friday, Dec. 07, 2012

DVD The Bourne Legacy: The climactic chase scene in this fourth installment in the "Bourne" franchise and the first without Matt Damon is a blast of careening action choreography. Shot on the narrow, traffic-choked, people-clogged streets of Manila, it's a race with the devil through the bustle of the city, a ballet of fight and flight in the best "Bourne" tradition. It's too bad, then, that much of what precedes it isn't nearly as compelling. Needlessly complex and circuitous, the talky Legacy feels too much like a setup for future films as opposed to a self-contained story that works on its own. It takes forever to introduce a crowd of characters and a globe's worth of locations. But, once The Bourne Legacy does get going, man, what a ride. Jeremy Renner has a commanding presence and certainly meets all the physical requirements needed to pull off the lead role (Aaron Cross this time), but he lacks that spark that made Damon so identifiable with the series. On DVD and DVD/Blu-ray combo.
