Lots of local news to get to, so let's dive right in.
Fort Worth psych-rock sextet the Hanna Barbarians will pull the wraps off their latest EP, Spaceway Sessions Vol. 1, at 8 p.m. Friday at Keys Lounge. The EP, produced by local knob-twirler extraordinaire Will Hunt, is part of a unique strategy to split the band's new album into four parts, rather than hit listeners with all of its new music at once. (A handful of extra tracks will also surface after the Sessions EPs are all released.) Along with the Barbarians, Dovetail will take the Keys Lounge stage. Ten dollars gets you admission and a copy of Spaceway Sessions Vol. 1.
While we're on the subject of Will Hunt, another of his recent projects, the Weekend Hustler's latest EP, Old School Flava, has just been released. One track, Illuminated, features bigredcap of Sydney, Australia. You can stream the new songs at soundcloud.com/theweekendhustlermusic.... Denton's Shiny Around the Edges will celebrate the release of its third and latest LP, The Night Is a Disco, at 9 p.m. Friday at Denton DIY venue Macaroni Island. The trio will be joined by Eccotone and Forever Home.
The all-ages show is free, and you can get a taste of Disco by heading to thenightisadisco.bandcamp.com.
Pining for the '90s? Pearl Jam tribute band Glorified G's, which counts Tony Diaz, Nick Choate, Bobby Zanzucchi, Damien Stewart and John Stevens among its ranks, will perform Saturday at the Grotto, and help support the Tarrant Area Food Bank. (Cover is $8, or $4 with two or more canned goods for TAFB.) Promising "accuracy, precision and power," Glorified G's will be joined by DJ Databass.
Speaking of can't-miss gigs, Jacob Furr & the Only Road, Jake Paleschic & Patriot and Siberian Traps have a free show set for Wednesday at The Basement Bar in the Stockyards.... As I noted on Twitter last week, Fort Worth's Warbeast is joining forces with metal legend Philip Anselmo to release a split album, War of the Gargantuas, on Jan. 8 via Housecore Records. The release marks Anselmo's debut as a solo artist, and also marks the final recorded contributions of Warbeast bassist Alan Bovee ( Dre Karst has since taken his place). Warbeast plans to release a new LP, a sophomore effort titled Destroy (currently being mastered), in early 2013.
The fruits of Fort Worth crooner Louie Evol's partnership with Dallas Grammy winners Play-N-Skillz will be unveiled Monday, when Louie's debut single, Heaven, which features Baby Bash, will be released.... Dallas "psychedelic gospel" group the Relatives will release their Jim Eno-produced debut LP, The Electric Word, on Feb. 19. And speaking of the Relatives, the group is among the first wave of local acts invited to play next year's South by Southwest music festival. Others from around here making the trek south in March include Blackstone Rangers, Ronnie Fauss, Sarah Jaffe, Tedashii and Somebody's Darling.
