Joaquin Phoenix goes off on Oscar

Posted 4:40pm on Thursday, Oct. 18, 2012

Has Joaquin Phoenix just destroyed his chances of getting an Oscar nomination for his role in The Master? Some think so after his interview with former Star-Telegram film critic Elvis Mitchell in Interview magazine came to light Thursday.

Phoenix, who was previously nominated for roles in Walk the Line and Gladiator, used a four-letter word to describe the Oscars and said, “I don’t believe in it. It’s a carrot, but it’s the worst tasting carrot I’ve ever tasted in my whole life. I don’t want this carrot.”

However, others take a contrarian view that his outburst just might help his chances. We'll have to wait and see. After all, being anti-Oscar didn't hurt Marlon Brando's chances of winning a gold statue for The Godfather in 1973 though he refused to accept it.
