DFW.com's Fall TV 2012 preview

Matthew Perry's Go On "officially" premieres Tuesday (8 p.m., KXAS/Channel 5), but of course already aired last month during the Olympics, and then again Monday night. That's the way TV is these days: Premieres premiere before they premiere, and you don't even have to watch them on TV anymore. But there are still a bunch of new shows about doctors, lawyers, cops and emergency personnel, as well as several dysfunctional-family comedies. The New Normal, which had a "special preview" Monday and then "premieres" a night after it first aired, features Andrew Rannells and Justin Bartha as Bryan and David, a Los Angeles couple who meet Goldie (Georgia King, right) a single mom who could help Bryan and David become an even more, um, modern family. Bebe Wood plays Shania, Goldie's 8-year-old daughter. Ryan Murphy (Glee) and Ali Adler (Chuck) co-created the series. Premieres 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, KXAS/Channel 5

Anthony Anderson, Zach Cregger and Jesse Bradford play Guys With Kids in a new comedy about dads who you know are going to screw up, because they're in a comedy about dads. Jimmy Fallon is an executive producer; he does pretty good in those commercials with the baby, so this has gotta be good, right? Right? "Sneak preview" 9 p.m. Wednesday, KXAS/Channel 5; official premiere 7:30 p.m. Sept. 26

Dr. Grace Devlin (Jordana Spiro) is The Mob Doctor, a Chicago surgeon who is paying off a family debt by reluctantly working for the mafia -- unbeknownst to her hospital colleagues. ER never got this complicated, and it had a lot of subplots! Premieres 8 p.m. Monday, KDFW/Channel 4

You say you want a Revolution? In this drama from J.J. Abrams and Supernatural's Erik Kripke (with a pilot directed by Jon Favreau), Tracy Spiridakos plays the leader of a resistance movement in a future United States in which technology has been wiped out. For now, though, you can watch this on TV, your computer, your iPad, your phone .... Premieres 9 p.m. Sept. 17, KXAS/Channel 5

Plano's Michael Urie, left, stars in Partners, a sitcom based on the lives of creators David Kohan and Max Mutchnick (Will & Grace). Urie plays Louis, whose friendship with business partner Joe (David Krumholtz, second from right) is threatened when Joe gets engaged to Ali (One Tree Hill's Sophia Bush). Brandon Routh plays Louis' life partner. Premieres 7:30 p.m. Sept. 24, KTVT/Channel 11

The Office's Mindy Kaling defects to Fox for The Mindy Project, a comedy about -- stop us if you've heard this -- a successful career woman with a screwed-up personal life. (Sound like a Meg Ryan comedy? Good, because Mindy's always quoting 'em!) Chris Messina plays a colleague who's always undermining her but secretly admires her! Where do they come up with this stuff? Premieres 8:30 p.m. Sept. 25, KDFW/Channel 4

Dennis Quaid and Jason O'Mara (a good actor who doesn't have the best track record with hit shows) play Sheriff Ralph Lamb and his brother Jack in Vegas, based on the real-life story of Ralph Lamb, a former rancher trying to bring law and order to 1960s Las Vegas. Michael Chiklis also stars as a Chicago gangster who, well, has different plans for the city. We'd say that after The Shield, we'd watch Chiklis in anything, but then we remembered that we didn't spend a whole lot of time watching No Ordinary Family, his most recent show. Still, good cast here. Premieres 9 p.m. Sept. 25, KTVT/Channel 11

Justin Kirk was one of the best things about Showtime's druggy comedy-drama Weeds, but he has an even bigger challenge with Animal Practice: a new sitcom in a bad timeslot on NBC. Not that the network isn't trying; it previewed this during the Olympics and the pilot's available online. Kirk plays Dr. George Coleman, an unorthodox veterinarian who's better with animals than he is with humans. No, seriously, where do they get these original ideas? Premieres 7 p.m. Sept. 26, KXAS/Channel 5

We would have loved to be in on the pitch meeting for Last Resort, which is about the crew of a nuclear submarine who become enemies of the state and wind up at an exotic but dangerous island after refusing to fire a nuclear missile at a hostile country. Sounds pretty complicated (and derivative) to us -- and it's in a time slot that usually spells doom for ABC shows. Camille de Pazzis, Michael Ng, Scott Speedman and Andrew Braugher are among the ensemble cast. 7 p.m. Premieres 7 p.m. Sept. 27, WFAA/Channel 8

Describing Elementary is pretty elementary: Jonny Lee Miller, whom we liked a lot as a creep in Dexter and as a good guy in the underappreciated Eli Stone, plays a modern-day Sherlock Holmes, so modern that his Watson is a woman (Lucy Liu). OK, so it's set in Manhattan but Holmes is still British and Watson is a a fallen-from-grace surgeon and an addiction specialist but Holmes has been through rehab and -- well, maybe it's not elementary. Premieres 9 p.m. Sept. 27, KTVT/Channel 11

Janet Montgomery stars in Made in Jersey as street-smart lawyer Martina Garretti, who rises quickly in her law firm despite not really fitting in with the buttoned-down types. This is at least semi-serious, but we can't help but think of it as "Jersey Shore meets a legal drama" -- which would have been more fun. Premieres 8 p.m. Sept. 28, KTVT/Channel 11

Terry O'Quinn, Vanessa Williams, Helena Mattsson, Mercedes Masohn, Robert Buckley, Samantha Logan, Dave Annable and Rachael Taylor star in -- well, that's it, we're outta room. Kidding! They star in 666 Park Avenue, which as you might guess from the title is about a satanic Manhattan apartment building. And we're not just talking about devlishly high rents. Premieres 9 p.m. Sept. 30, WFAA/Channel 8

Stephen Amell, who did not play Oliver Queen in Smallville, plays him in Arrow, the CW's latest comic-book/fantasy inspired series, about a rich playboy who lives a secret life as a hooded, bow-wielding vigilante. Premieres 7 p.m. Oct. 10, KDAF/Channel 33

Shades of Third Watch (not to mention Emergency! and ER): Chicago Fire is an NBC ensemble drama about first responders. Monica Raymund, pictured, plays Gabriella Dawson, a paramedic who faces harrowing situations, although we're betting she still has it better in this picture than the person on the gurney. Premieres 9 p.m. Oct. 10, KXAS/Channel 5

Robert Wisdom, Charles Esten, Connie Britton, Eric Close, Hayden Panettiere, Poweres Boothe, Sam Palladio, Clare Bowen and Jonathan Jackson star in Nashville, which, despite the size of its cast, is not about the entire city of Nashville, which is even bigger. Britton, whom we've loved since Friday Night Lights, plays a fading country-music queen; Panettiere plays a ruthless up-and-comer. Premieres 9 p.m. Oct. 10, WFAA/Channel 8

Jay Ryan and Smallville's Kristin Kreuk star in Beauty and the Beast, which doesn't call for a whole lot of explanation except that this beast isn't always a beast -- he only becomes that way when he's angry. And you wouldn't like him when he's angry. Especially if you're a bad guy. Cool photo, right? Premieres 8 p.m. Oct. 11, KDAF/Channel 33

Mamie Gummer, a k a Meryl Streep's daughter, plays the title role in Emily Owens, M.D., about a young doctor trying to become an adult -- despite all the juvenile colleagues surrounding her. And by juvenile, we don't mean teen-age -- we just mean acting like it. Or worse. Premieres 8 p.m. Oct. 16, KDAF/Channel 33

Sara Rue, Lily Tomlin, Reba McEntire -- pretty good cast so far -- Justin Prentice, Juliette Angelo and Jai Rodriguez star in Malibu Country, in which Reba plays Reba (going out on a limb there with the name, eh?), a Nashville mom who loads up the truck and heads to Malibu when she splits from her cheatin' country-star husband. Culture clashes and hilarity ensue as Reba the character tries to launch her own country-music career from the West Coast. We're pretty sure she can do it. Premieres 7:30 p.m. Nov. 2, WFAA/Channel 8
