First look: XII Whiskey Bar & Grill

Posted 8:59pm on Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2012

With football season fast approaching, my buddies and I are always on the lookout for new places to hang out and watch sports. Our criteria is pretty lax -- the most important things on our checklist include having a plethora of flat screens and a good crowd -- but there still needs to be good food if we are going to spending several hours in one place.

The latest spot we sampled is the brand new XII Whiskey Bar & Grill, located on the street level of the GrandMarc at Westberry Place on the TCU campus, just east of Cafe Brazil. The new bar and grill is in the spot that previously housed Hammerhead Sushi.

We dropped by on a Monday afternoon -- its first day to be open for lunch -- and had the entire place to ourselves. Upon entry, the bar and a lounge area are to the right with the restaurant section on the left.

The menu featured "bar food," including burgers, sliced brisket, chicken fried chicken and hot wings. I ordered the chicken fried steak ($11) with fresh cut fries. While not the quality of Reata's chicken fried steak, it was still good and has a spot in the rotation for future visits when we return to watch a game on one of the 12 flat screens.

The thing that is going to be the new spot's calling card is the bar area. According to its website, "45-50 different kinds of whiskey/bourbon/and scotches that hail from our great state of Texas" will be offered. Our server told us that last weekend the place was so packed she could barely move.

Expect big crowds on weekend nights and especially during TCU football road games.
