The sad, slow, bewildering downward spiral of Randy Travis continued early Friday morning as, according to TMZ and other outlets, the country star was cited for "simple assault" around 1 a.m. in a Plano church parking lot and taken to the hospital.
The Plano police department reportedly told TMZ that Travis "was the primary aggressor" and the situation involved a "family argument taking place between a husband and a wife ... and [Travis] got involved." Sources also told TMZ Travis appeared to be "extremely intoxicated."
UPDATE: The Dallas Morning News is reporting the Travis incident at Prestonwood Baptist Church wasn't as dramatic as what TMZ's report suggests, at least according to the Plano PD's public information officer David Tilley. [N]othing more than what we deal with on a regular basis, Tilley told the News, a disturbance. It so happens this one involves a high-profile person.
UPDATE 2: The Associated Press checks in as well, confirms Travis was cited for a class C misdemeanor and says the police report does not indicate alcohol was involved in this incident.
