Dallas native (and currently Austin-based) Ruby Jane Smith is 17 years old, and, incredibly, something of a music-biz veteran. The acclaimed fiddler and singer-songwriter began her career at the ripe age of 7, after a dazzling turn on the Grand Ole Opry stage, where she remains the youngest fiddler ever invited to perform. Smith, who goes by her first and middle name only on stage, has received tutelage from Asleep at the Wheel's Ray Benson, among others, making her part of the next generation of Texas talent. Smith's second studio album, Celebrity (Empire of Emptiness), just hit stores, and she'll bring her tunes to Fort Worth's McDavid Studio at 8 p.m. Friday. Tickets are $18.70 via basshall.com.
Fort Worth duo Bass Drum will celebrate the release of its sophomore effort, Telescope on the Moon, at 10 p.m. Friday at the Grotto. The talented pair of Jon Mosig and Bryan Plemons will be joined for this 21-and-up gig by openers Pawn Shop Gentlemen. Bass Drum will offer free music, along with T-shirts and other raffle prizes. Cover is a mere $5.
