Eats beat: Book a manly meal for dad's big day

Posted 4:18pm on Tuesday, Jun. 12, 2012

Father's Day is steak day.

For years, that meant lunch in the Fort Worth Stockyards, at old-school Cattlemen's or contemporary Hunter Brothers' H3 Ranch.

But now, downtown has the "beef block."

And Dad can land a dining deal.

Del Frisco's Double Eagle Steakhouse has the best special all weekend: a two-for-$99 steak-and-crab-cake special for anyone, plus a $25 gift card for every dad to use next visit.

If you're doing the math, that means a couple can dine for $99 this weekend, then $74 the next trip. It opens at 4 p.m. Sunday; 812 Main St., 817-877-3999, delfriscos.com.

Across the street, Ruth's Chris Steak House will open at 2 p.m. and serve its ongoing three-course $40.99 special, including a steak-and-shrimp combo. There's also a $7 bar menu; 813 Main St., 817-348-0080, ruthschris.com.

In the same block, The Capital Grille also will open at 4 p.m.; 800 Main St., 817-348-9200, thecapitalgrille.com.

At the north end of Main Street, Mercury Chop House will open at 11 a.m. and serve its regular menu; 301 Main St., 817-336-4129, fortworthchophouse.com.

Reata Restaurant is open every Sunday; 310 Houston St., 817-336-1009, reata.net.

(Yes, one of our prime steakhouses closed this month. Bailey's Prime Plus was simply surrounded by too many better and cheaper restaurants, and had nothing to match better Eddie V's Prime Seafood two blocks west.)

For something different, the Riverwalk Cantina at the showy Gaylord Texan resort hotel in Grapevine is turning its usual Sunday brunch into a Father's Day buffet that includes New York strip steaks, smoked brisket and pork ribs, plus chicken enchiladas, breakfast dishes and an extensive dessert selection.

It's $49; 817-722-9024, 817-778-2215 or gaylordhotels.com.

Olenjack's Grille in Arlington is turning its Sunday buffet into a father's feast, offering pork ribs with Texas peach-barbecue sauce, Louisiana smothered chicken, Shiner Bock-marinated flatiron steak, plus breakfast items and desserts; $28, 770 Road to Six Flags E., 817-226-2600, olenjacksgrille.com.

It's also a good day to try the Sunday buffet at Buttons Restaurant in Fort Worth, billed as "Southern chic" and serving everything from chicken-and-waffles to brisket, catfish and Southern home-cooking specials, $25; 4701 West Freeway, 817-735-4900, www.buttonsrestaurants.com.
