Childish Gambino at Palladium Ballroom
Donald Glover is a man of many talents. He is best known for starring as doofy jock Troy on NBC's cult hit Community, but he got his start as a writer on 30 Rock, made a name for himself as a blisteringly funny stand-up comedian, and now, has forged a path into the world of indie hip-hop under the moniker Childish Gambino. However silly he may be as a comic or on TV, Glover is deadly serious as Childish Gambino (whose debut, Camp, was released late last year), leaning occasionally on satire, but often spitting surprisingly intense rhymes, backed by live instrumentation and samples. With Danny Brown.
8 p.m. Saturday. Palladium Ballroom, Dallas. $25.
The Hold Steady at the Loft
North Texas music fans should be pinching themselves -- a double dose of Craig Finn in a two-month span? The Hold Steady's frontman briefly toured behind his solo debut, Clear Heart Full Eyes and stopped by Club Dada in February. Now, he is bringing his Hold Steady bandmates back through town as the group continues to tour behind 2010's superb LP Heaven Is Whenever. Seeing the revered indie rock band in the 400-capacity Loft, above the Palladium Ballroom? Well, that's just icing on the cake. With the Happen-Ins.
8 p.m. Wednesday. The Loft, Dallas. $18.
