Brace yourself for a healthy dose of folk: The inaugural Deep Ellum Big Folkin' Festival kicks off at 5 p.m. Saturday at The Prophet Bar and its Big Room in Dallas. It promises to showcase a rather eclectic swath of the musicians who make their home in the extraordinarily elastic genre known as folk. Fort Worth's Telegraph Canyon will headline, with performances from Whiskey Folk Ramblers, the O's, the Will Callers, Bravo, Max!, Nicholas Altobelli, Kirby Brown and many more. Tickets are $12 in advance (via Prekindle.com), $15 at the door.
After a decade spent grinding it out in the music business, Fort Worth's Green River Ordinance will savor the opportunity to headline Dallas' House of Blues at 9 p.m. Friday. The fellas are their own bosses these days, having parted ways with Capitol Records, but continue to tour and record. They released their second full-length effort, Under Fire, in February. In its review, DFW.com called the LP "an expansive 14-track collection demonstrating the band's knack for fusing hopeful lyrics with soaring melodies." Tickets are $13, $15 at the door.
