Tipping back a few adult beverages on St. Patrick's Day is as necessary as scarfing a slice of turkey on Thanksgiving.
But rather than drain glasses of Guinness or suck down tumblers of 18-year-old Scotch, put a little thought into your St. Patty's swilling.
We asked Eddie "Lucky" Campbell of The Chesterfield in Dallas, a man who knows a thing or two about the fine art of cocktails, to whip up some recipes. He provided three modern drinks that capture the spirit of Ireland in a fresh way. Share 'em with a leprechaun you love.
The Irish necktie
2 ounces Jameson Irish Whiskey
Ginger beer
7 dashes Angostura bitters for the surface of the drink
Place ingredients, in the order listed, in an old-fashioned glass with ice.
Buena suerte
(It means "good luck"; "For a Texas tribute to St. Patty's Day," says Campbell.)
Egg white
2 ounces Ambhar Reposado tequila
1 ounce heavy cream
1/2 ounce lime
1/4 ounce agave nectar
3/4 ounce creme de menthe, plus more for stencil
3 dashes orange bitters
Place all ingredients in a shaker tin, add ice, and shake vigorously. Strain into a large coupe or martini glass. Spray-paint a clover on the surface using an atomizer, creme de menthe and a clover stencil.
The old Irishman
Sugar cube
5 dashes Jerry Thomas decanter bitters
1/2 ounce soda water
2 lemon peels
2 ounces Jameson Irish Whiskey
In a mixing glass, combine sugar cube, bitters and soda. Squeeze lemon peel into the mix, add whiskey, and stir until sugar cube is dissolved. Strain over an Irish spring-water ice cube in an old-fashioned glass, and squeeze a new lemon peel over the drink.
